Topic
The children have continued to enjoy their learning about World War Two and have produced some pictures of ‘The Blitz’ using chalk pastels.

Race for Life

Along with the rest of the school, Year 4 fully embraced supporting and participating in our school Race for Life event.

On Thursday 29th June, Year 4 visited Cobbaton Combat Collection. The children had a fantastic time learning about various aspects of World War 2 as well as being able to look at and handle artefacts from this period in history.

Year 4 have been learning about the Second World War as part of their topic: Is it right to fight?
They have covered why the war broke out and have taken part in an air raid, getting under their tables when the siren sounds. They also had the chance to hear an authentic siren from the period.

Year 4 have also been making model Anderson shelters and have used sticking, cutting and scoring to ensure these are well presented. They used finishing techniques to improve their appearance.

On Friday 19th May, Year 4 took part in a Multi-skills Festival at Bideford College.

The children completed their Roman shields and then took part in a battle re-enactment, practising the Tortoise Shell Formation as a method of defence. As well as being able to think about what it might have felt like to be a soldier in the Roman army, the children were also able to test out whether their shields were fit for purpose. The children thoroughly enjoyed this celebration of their learning!

During our English learning, the children have been focusing on the genre of Myths and Legends.  To link with our topic on the Romans, the children are going to write a recount of the legend of Romulus and Remus. They have enjoyed completing some role play and character work to help them learn and remember the text.

Design Technology
In Year 4, our design technology outcome is for the children to design and make a Roman style shield that they are able to use to re-enact the tortoiseshell formation. They have so far completed some research, designed and painted the front of their shield, and have also carried out an investigation to test the suitability of materials and joining techniques.

‘Is it  Right to Fight?’ is our topic focus for this term in Year 4. The children will spend the first half term learning about the Roman period in history, followed by WWII in the second half term to consider answers to this question.
Football
As part of their PE focus on football, Year 4 got together for an inter-class tournament.

Spring Term.

During English the children have been learning about explanation texts in preparation for presenting their learning and research about various aspects of Extreme Earth.

Our learning in mathematics is currently focusing on estimating and converting different units of measure, as well as solving problems related to time.

We have been continuing to focus on the Islamic Faith and making comparisons with Christianity. In Year 4 children have been focusing on religious building, places of worship and prayer.

Year 4 children have continued learning about Extreme Earth and had the opportunity to make a volcano out of play dough and make it erupt using red food colouring, bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. They made scientific observations and explained what was happening during this process.

The children have also been learning about earthquake drills and how to stay safe in an earthquake by dropping, covering and holding onto something like a table. The children also enjoyed visiting the Burton Art Gallery to look at art work produced by themselves and pupils from other schools.

Spring Term Year 4 Home Learning Expectations
Over the Half-Term holiday
•    Topic Research: Children can research a different area of our topic on Extreme Earth. They might research tornados, tsunamis, earthquakes and anything to do with extreme environments on our planet. This will be good preparation for the second half of our spring term topic.
Weekly
•    Reading at least 3x (per week)
•    Spelling practise from the year 3/4 spelling list
•    Times table practise
Teachers will be looking at homework effort on a Wednesday. Children need to remember to hand in their homework book and reading log on a Wednesday morning, so that house tokens can be awarded for practising reading, spelling and time tables.
Empty water bottle – could the children please also bring in an old empty water bottle for an investigation we will be doing in science after the half-term holiday.

Year 4 children have been working on multiplicative reasoning in maths. They have worked hard to represent their answers using resources such as place value counters and Numicon.

They have also been learning about different kinds of volcanoes, where these are in the world and the advantages and disadvantages of this aspect of physical geography.

Year 4 children are enjoying their new topic on Extreme Earth. They have used water colour pencils to create pictures of volcanoes in the style of Edgar Degas. They also used sketch pencils to create images of tornadoes.

They have also been learning about solids, liquids and gases and the water cycle in science and how a volcano erupts.

Year 4 children have made a promising start to the spring term. They are now learning about Extreme Earth in their topic which includes volcanoes, earthquakes and environments that are difficult for humans to live in.

The children have returned from the Christmas holiday with some creative presentations about the research that they have carried out, and have been sharing this with their class. Thank you for all your support with this home learning.

Autumn Term

Year 4 children have had a busy few weeks preparing for the Christmas performance. They also enjoyed a trip to Rosemoor on Wednesday, 7th December.

The children made Christmas decorations using materials they had collected from the woods including leaves, pine cones and holly. These looked really effective and will look great on any Christmas tree. They also made a Christmas card using natural resources.

Year 4 children have been learning about electrical circuits. They have found out how to make a simple circuit and about circuits and conductors.

The children made biscuits which everyone enjoyed eating! In English, they then wrote clear instructions for making these. The biscuits included ingredients the ancient Egyptians would have used including cinnamon and dates.

To celebrate Anti-Bullying week, the children have been making some posters to promote positive friendships!

Freya and Samuel won their respective races at the Kingsley Cross Country Festival. Well done to all other Year 4 children took who took part and represented the school extremely well!


The children have continued to enjoy their topic on ancient Egypt and have been practising and developing their artistic skills. They have created Tutankhamun sketches, clay Canopic jars and have painted hieroglyphics.

In English, the children have drafted poems around the theme of ancient Egypt. Some of these were shape poems and included similes, metaphors and personification. Buzzards even produced a book of poems.

On Tuesday 18th October, 2016 Mrs Recycle came to St Mary’s to teach the children about the three Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle! The children enjoyed learning about how plastic is made and how we can reduce our impact on the environment.

Half Term Home Learning.

Our topic this term has been Ancient Egypt.  Over half term please research some new information, about this topic, and be prepared to share this with the class. You may present this is anyway you choose, ie, a poster, powerpoint, pictures, rap, poem.

 

The children have visited the Burton Art Gallery to look at the ‘Project 65’ exhibition and have started writing their own Haiku poetry in response to the pieces of art work they saw.

On Friday 7th October, Year 4 took part in a Multi Skills event at Westcroft Junior School.

As part of their topic learning on Ancient Egypt the children have been practising and developing their art skills using the medium of clay to produce their own style of Canopic Jars.

 Year 4 had an exciting morning at West Croft School with the author Megan Rix who read parts of her stories.

Year 4 had another outing to Bideford College to watch a production about staying safe online and cyber bullying.

The children will be having another trip on Thursday to the Burton Art Gallery to give them some ideas for their poetry. In maths, children have started a new learning journey on additive reasoning and they are enjoying learning about ancient Egypt in their topic work.

In English, the children are working on stories set in imaginary worlds. Their class text is Jack and the Dreamsack and children will  be using this to create their own settings and characters further along in their learning journey.
They have made a good  start to their learning journey in maths which is focusing on Number Sense. This has involved the children reading and writing whole numbers, representing these using the Base 10 apparatus and pictures and ordering and comparing numbers.
