Summer Term.

Curriculum Overview - Year 1 Summer Term 2016

Welcome back to the summer term! We can’t believe how fast time is flying!
We enjoyed learning about ‘Space’ last half term. For Science Week we did lots of space related experiments. Here is one that Mr Scarrett did with a bottle of coke and a packet of mentos.

We celebrated Easter with the help of St. Mary’s Church who created an ‘Easter Experience’ for our children. Groups of children went around a carousel of activies led by the helpers of the church which they really enjoyed.

We are looking forward to learning about ‘Under the Sea’ for the first half term. We will be writing recounts, riddles, information texts and stories. We will be doing lots of measure in maths. We are going to be decorating our classrooms with junk model sea creatures and learning about the environment that they live in.

Spring Term.

Curriculum Overview - Year 1 Spring Term 2016

In Year One we have been busy preparing for our ‘Great Fire of London’ re-enactment! We have started painting and decorating our Tudor houses that will be burnt. The grown ups are all looking forward to getting rid of the heap of boxes in the Year One middle area!

In English we have now finished our sequence of work on ‘Tell Me a Dragon’. The children have written their own booklets with fantastic dragon descriptions!

We have begun a new sequence of work based on the book ‘The Dragon Machine’ and will be thinking about all sorts of mischievous things that dragons could get up to in school without us realising! We have plenty of ideas!

In Maths we have been working hard to secure our understanding of place value, and are getting quite good at counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We have spent time looking at the patterns we can spot when selecting these numbers, and have learnt the word ‘multiples’!

It has been nice to see a little bit of sunshine over the past couple of days, rather than all of the rainy downpours that we have been having. We’ve managed to get outside for break and lunch times, and at last have also been able to get outside for our P.E sessions!

The Pantomime was good fun (if a little scary at times!) and we made lots of noise singing along to the songs!

Welcome back to school! We have hit the ground running and the children have thrown themselves back into their learning.

Our new topic of ‘Fire’ has been very popular and the children have enjoyed our writing sequence based on the book ‘Tell Me a Dragon’. They have produced some lovely descriptive writing and we are looking forward to seeing what they do for their final piece of writing. Our ‘Dragon’ theme has continued into Art. We painted watercolour wash backgrounds and added silhouettes of dragons over the top. Our next Art project is based on marbling!

In our afternoon Topic sessions, we have continued the theme of ‘Fire’, learning about ‘The Great Fire of London’. We have learnt about the history of the fire and have started to learn about Samuel Pepys. We compared firefighting in 1666 to firefighting in 2016 and talked about the differences.

In Math’s we have been concentrating on learning our number bonds to 20 and using them in different contexts. We have explored adding two numbers together to find the total. In some of our maths sessions we have been using money.

All of the adults are really impressed with the learning behaviours that the children are showing. They are working really hard- Well Done Mallards!

We have been busy in Year One over the past couple of weeks.
We have finished our block of work on Geometry. The children have applied their knowledge if shape in some tricky problem solving activities.

We have almost completed our English block of work based around the story ‘What do you do with a tail like this?’
As part of this, we have looked at special clothing and the reasons for it. We were fortunate enough to have a visit from Mr Symons in his ‘Fireman’ mode. We saw all of the different parts of his uniform and talked about why it was important.

We have been practising our songs for the Christmas production and are looking forward to performing it to you all!

We have had a busy few weeks in Mallards!

In Maths, we have begun a block of work based on Geometric Reasoning. The children have been impressing us with their recall of both 2D and 3D shape knowledge. We have been talking about the properties of the different shapes and practising using the correct vocabulary. The children have then been applying their knowledge to solve problems using their knowledge of shape.

In English, we have spent the past week learning all about Guy Fawkes and The Gunpowder Plot. We learnt about the history behind Bonfire Night. The children then worked in groups to create a piece of performance poetry about Fireworks. They worked incredibly hard during this session and we were very proud of what they achieved in a relatively short space of time.

On Friday, we baked biscuits and decorated them with sweet fireworks.

We have started rehearsing for our Christmas Production and all of the children in Year 1 will be dressing as sheep. We will be making masks in class, and the children will need to wear black or white leggings/trousers and a black or white t-shirt.

The children are doing really well with adjusting to the routines of Year 1.

We have done lots of descriptive writing based on ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ and are now moving on to Non-Fiction texts. The children will be writing their own Non-Fiction books about a jungle animal.

In Maths, we have spent a couple of weeks exploring measure and ordering items according to weight, height and length. The children have been introduced to standard units of measure (centimetres and metres) as well as exploring their own ways of measuring.

290901 290903 290904

We are now moving on to a maths block which focuses on number bonds and simple addition. The children will be learning their number bonds to 5 and 10. Apologies now for the repetitive songs that they may come home singing!

Welcome back to school! We hope you all had a lovely summer!

The children seem to be quickly settling back into the school routines, and are adapting well to the changes and demands of being in Year One!

The structure of the day is a little different to when they were in Foundation Stage, however, the transition is made as smooth as possible by keeping lots of the same things in place too.

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, our theme is ‘The Jungle’ and we are in the process of transforming the Year One area into a jungle! Lots of the work that the children will be doing, will be linked into this topic.

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to pop in either in the mornings, or at the end of the day and any of the adults will be happy to help.

Here are a few photographs from the first week back!
