Curriculum Overview - Year 2 Spring Term 2016

The children have really been enjoying our Great Fire of London topic. Last week they made some fantastic silhouette pictures using marbling for the background. Over the next few weeks we will be designing and making Tudor style houses to burn at the end of this half term.

In our English we have now moved onto story writing. Our core text is about a tiger who has lost his smile and the adventure that he goes on to find it. We will be doing lots of work on character, setting and problems within a story.

In Maths we are focusing on addition and subtraction. The children will be learning how to use blank number lines to add and subtract two digit numbers before applying these methods to problem solve.

The children have started the new term with lots of enthusiasm and have already completed some fantastic work.

Last week we made New Year’s Resolutions which are now on display around the classroom. The children thought about what they would like to improve both at home and at school.

Our topic for this term is Fire! We will be learning about the Great Fire of London and using this as a stimulus to write poetry and then diary entries. We will be designing and building Tudor style houses as well as using the marbling technique to create fire pictures.

Our Maths focus for the next two weeks is Multiplication and Division. The children will be focusing on the 2,5 and 10 times tables. They will be using a variety of methods including arrays and number lines to solve multiplication and division calculations.

Last Friday we all dressed up as superheroes for comic relief. The children looked fantastic and raised lots of money for a very good cause.

This week we have been tackling multiplication and division. The children have been using arrays to multiply and have worked really hard to familiarise themselves with the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. They then applied this to a challenge problem on Thursday.

In English we have finished our final write with the children producing some brilliant sets of instructions. They remembered to use verbs, adverbs and conjunctions which made their work detailed and interesting to read.

On Thursday 10th December we will be going on a trip to Rosemoor Gardens in Torrington. The children will be completing Christmas workshops making decorations and Christmas cards. Letters about this trip will be out next week.

Welcome back!

Our English topic is instructions and we are using the story ‘How to wash a Woolly Mammoth’. The children will be looking at verbs, adverbs and conjunction within this block of work.
In Maths we are moving onto Geometric Reasoning which includes shape, symmetry, pattern and position and direction.

This half term the children will be building towards our Christmas Production! It is called Baubles and focuses on a traditional nativity. This week the children will be given parts and lines to learn. Please support them with this at home if possible.

Homework will be given out every other Wednesday. There will be a date shown on the top for homework showing. This is an opportunity for the children to share their work with their peers.
